Coronavirus and smokers

Smoking damages the lungs and in case of infection COVID-19 may worsen the course of fatal disease!

To date, we offer a brief summary of the latest scientific findings on the association of smoking with COVID-19 from all relevant medical sources listed below.

The World Health Organization has warned in a timely manner that smoking increases the health risks of COVID-19 infection. Smoking has a major impact on the health of the entire respiratory tract. It is particularly risky for its lower part, which is the human lungs.

In addition to the above, recent work by Australian authors published on 20 March 2020 points to the biological mechanism of increased smokers’ vulnerability to COVID-19 infection caused by upregulation of ACE2 receptors. And it also points out that smoking can increase the risk of infection, transmission and increased mortality from COVID-19. These risks and consequences relate not only to cigarette smokers but also to users of electronic cigarettes and IQOS.

194 909 was the total number of coronavirus-infected cases detected on 18 March 2020, including 7 876 deaths. Smoking is thought to be associated with a poor prognosis of infection. In addition to the human respiratory tract, it also harms the immune system and thus the ability to cope with infections, making smokers more vulnerable to infectious diseases. Studies have shown that smokers will receive 2x more likely to have influenza and then have more severe symptoms. In the past, they have been found to have higher mortality rates. The authors conducted a systematic review of scientific work and their findings on the relationship between COVID-19 infection and smoking. Findings from China have shown that there were more smokers among COVID-19 patients who needed mechanical pulmonary ventilation, or who died, and the percentage of smokers among severe cases of infection was higher. Smokers were approximately 2.4 times more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and need mechanical ventilation than non-smokers.
